Other Names

Aussie Border Heeler

Description

The Border Heeler is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Border Collie and the Australian Cattle Dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Note: the Australian Cattle Dog is also called Australian Heeler, Hall's Heeler, Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler, Red Heeler, Australian Cattledog and Australischer Treibhund.

Mercedes the Border Heeler laying on a bed

Mercedes the Border Collie / Blue Heeler mix at 2 years old—"Mercedes is a Border Collie / Blue Heeler mix. She is very well behaved. She has never shown aggressive behaviour. My husband and I have had her around friends children and she nurtures them as if they are her pups. The youngest child was a newborn. She laid by the little ones bouncy seat at all times. If the mother or myself picked up the baby, Mercedes was following right behind. She is also amazing with our 2 cats (Snickerdoodles and Mr. Smitters), as well as other dogs. Her play buddies include... Sammy the Pit Bull, Midnight the Italian Mastiff, Olie the Pit Bull / Boxer mix), Wookie the Silky Terrier), Paris the Chipoodle, and many more. She is the smartest dog I have ever seen. She loves to play tennis ball. During ball time she jumps as high as me. I am 5ft 5in. She does flips in the air, jumps over bushes and obstacles. She also loves basketballs, frisbees, footballs, anything that you give her permission to play with. We got her a pair of shoes to chew on that are real leather, she has had them since 6 months old, and there is not a scratch in them. She does not care for being dominated by anything. I am actually the only person she let's be dominant. She really has no bad habits other than if she is outside and another dog passes by she gets very excited and wants to play with the other dog, and she makes sure to get their attention. She sits on her butt and hind legs like a human and watches TV, and also cuddles under covers when it is time for bed. My husband and I worked very hard to train her. She knows sit, shake, lay down, sit pretty, and jump. She is extremely loyal and protective of me."

Freckle the Border Collie / Australian Cattle dog mix at 2 years old—"Hello, this is my adorable puppy "Freckle". He is a Border Collie crossed with an Australian Cattle Dog (Red Heeler). He has the most gentle nature, loves everyone. Hi 5's, shake hands, speaking etc are part of our day. He talks all the time, and has his own special language just for our cat! He doesn't appreciate me going to work, with an extended very vocal "telling off" as soon as I get home. My life is satisfying now with my boy! Kids have grown up and my partner works too much so he is my constant companion and best friend. People stop me in the street to ask me about him as he has such lovely and unusual colouring. We live in the outback desert region of South Australia so he blends in well with our very red dirt!

Sadie the Border Collie / Australian Cattle Dog mix at 2 years old—"Sadie started off slim like a Border Collie, and then grew to resemble the stocky build of a Australian Cattle Dog. Sadie has an excellent temperment. She is always happy and smiling and ready to play. She gets along with other dogs, cats, and kids. All she wants to do is find a companion to play with."

Koal the Border Heeler puppy at 4 months old—"This is Koal. He is a 4-month-old 3/4 Blue Heeler and 1/4 Border Collie. He is quite a handful, and loves to steal his big sisters toys and hide them and wrestle her for them when she finds them. He is way more of a cuddlebug than his sister and loves to lay on mom and dads lap to have his belly scratched, very much of an attention hog! He is also very protective of his mom and sister, and won't allow other dogs or strangers into the yard when he is out. He loves his mom's nieces too, I think it is because they are small like him. He also LOVES to eat snow! (And anything else that is on the floor for that matter)."
